   ocr: The large thorax is clothed with numerous golden-brown hairs. It bears three pairs of legs, one pair of wings, and posteriorly, two small, stalked, globular organs, the "balancers. 1 The wings are exceedingly delicate and the ribs or veins by which they are reinforced are covered with scales. The malarial mosquito may be easily distinguished by the presence of four spots of densely arranged scales in characteristic positions on its wings-hence the name maculipennis or spotted-winged. The balancers, without which the insect is unable to maintain its equilibrium in 57
